Don’t Let Your Dental Benefits Expire: Make the Most of Them Before December 31
Every year, millions of people leave dental benefits unused. Unlike a health plan with a deductible that carries you through the year, most dental insurance plans reset on January 1, and any unused benefits disappear with the calendar. As the year winds down, now is the ideal time to make sure you’re getting the full value of the coverage you’ve already paid for.
Why Dental Benefits Don’t Roll Over
Most dental plans come with an annual maximum, the most your insurance will pay toward your care in a plan year. For many plans this falls somewhere between $1,000 and $2,000, though yours may differ. If you don’t use it, that money doesn’t carry into next year. You’ve paid your premiums all year, and unused benefits are simply lost.
Many plans also have a yearly deductible, which you may have already met if you’ve had care this year. That can make the remaining months a particularly cost-effective time to schedule treatment. Let’s figure this out together!
Start by Checking Your Benefits
Before the holidays get busy, take a few minutes to find out where you stand:
- Your annual maximum: How much coverage do you have, and how much have you used so far?
- Your deductible: Has it been met for the year?
- Your coverage percentages: Plans often cover preventive care at a higher percentage than fillings, crowns, or other restorative work.
- Your plan year: Most run January to December, but some don’t, so confirm your reset date.

Treatments Worth Considering Before Year-End
Preventive care. If you haven’t had a cleaning and exam in the last six months, schedule one. These visits are typically covered at a high percentage and catch small problems before they become expensive ones.
Treatment you’ve been putting off. That filling, crown, or repair your dentist mentioned at your last visit won’t fix itself. Small issues tend to grow, and waiting can turn a simple fix into a more involved procedure. Using this year’s benefits now could save you money and trouble later.
Restorative work that improves your smile. While insurance generally doesn’t cover treatments that are purely cosmetic, some procedures serve both a functional and an aesthetic purpose. For example, replacing an old, cracked filling or a worn crown can restore the health of your tooth and improve how it looks. Coverage varies by plan, so we can review what applies to your situation.
Phasing larger treatment plans. If you’re planning more extensive work, it may make financial sense to split treatment across two plan years. You can complete part of it before December 31 using this year’s benefits, then finish in January when your coverage resets. This lets you take advantage of two annual maximums instead of one.
Why Scheduling Early Matters
December is the busiest month of the year for dental offices, and appointments fill quickly. Insurance claims can also take time to process, and some treatments require more than one visit. If you wait until the last week of December, you may find there simply isn’t room on the schedule.
Booking in the next few weeks gives you the best choice of times and leaves room to finish multi-visit treatment before your benefits expire.
What About FSA Funds?
If you have a Flexible Spending Account through your employer, check your balance too. Many FSAs are “use it or lose it” by the end of the plan year, though some allow a short grace period or limited carryover. Dental care is an eligible expense, so an FSA can help cover your out-of-pocket costs for treatment, including things insurance doesn’t fully cover.
