What is CEREC Technology?
CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. It is an advanced CAD/CAM (Computer-Aided Design and Computer-Aided Manufacturing) system that allows Dr. Donnie Dean and our team to design, mill, and place high-quality ceramic restorations — such as crowns, veneers, inlays, and onlays — in a single visit, right here in our office. Instead of sending impressions to an outside dental lab and waiting 1–2 weeks (with temporary crowns in between), CEREC brings the entire process chairside using 3D digital technology. This means you can often walk out the same day with a permanent, custom restoration that looks natural and functions beautifully.
How CEREC Works (Step by Step)
- Digital Scanning We use a comfortable intraoral scanner (like the Primescan) to capture precise 3D images of your teeth. No messy impression materials or gagging — just a quick, accurate digital model of your mouth.
- Computer-Aided Design (CAD) The CEREC software creates a detailed 3D model on the computer. Dr. Dean custom-designs the restoration to perfectly match your bite, tooth shape, color, and surrounding teeth for a seamless, natural look.
- In-Office Milling (CAM) The design is sent to our on-site milling unit, which carves the restoration from a solid block of high-strength, tooth-colored ceramic in about 5–15 minutes (depending on the case). The material is durable, metal-free, and highly esthetic.
- Placement Dr. Dean checks the fit, makes any minor adjustments if needed, polishes it, and bonds the permanent restoration in place — all in one appointment.
The entire process for a crown or veneer typically takes 1–2 hours, depending on the complexity.
