Traditionally, getting a dental crown would require at least two visits to the dentist. At the first one, you would get injected with anesthesia, your tooth would be reshaped to fit the crown, an impression would be taken, and then a temporary crown would be fitted over the tooth. All that, and you’re still not done! You’d then return to your dentist’s office to have the permanent restoration put in. For a long time, dental crowns were primarily made of either silver or gold, and while these materials are very durable, they can quickly cause issues for a patient. They are unnatural looking for one, and the metals actually expand and contract as they are exposed to hot and cold temperatures. With CEREC, Dr. Donnie Dean instead uses a tooth-colored ceramic to fabricate his crowns. This material is more similar to real enamel in both color and structure and doesn’t respond as much to varying temperatures. The end result is that the crown not only looks better, but it will last longer as well. The material also bonds more readily to natural tooth structure than regular metal, helping Dr. Dean maintain more of a tooth’s natural strength while repairing it.
