Dental ImplantWhat are dental implants?

When you lose an adult tooth or teeth, you need a prosthetic replacement to restore both your smile and your ability to chew and talk. Dental implants are replacement teeth that are rooted in your jaw.

A dental implant consists of a titanium post, an abutment, and a crown. The posts are made of titanium because this metal has high biocompatibility and integrates with your jawbone to provide stability and support. The abutment connects the post to the crown, which is the visible part of the implant, custom-made to look like one of your natural teeth.

What are the benefits of dental implants?
Dental implants offer many benefits over other tooth replacement options.

Stability

The titanium root not only provides a stable base for the implant, but it also stimulates healthy bone growth and density in your jaw.

Permanence

A dental implant is permanently placed in your jaw; you don’t have to take it out or start any special cleaning habits like you do with dentures.

Natural appearance

Dental implants provide a natural appearance and are custom-made to fit your mouth precisely — no one will ever know that you have a false tooth unless you choose to tell them.

What happens during a dental implant procedure?

If your jaw is healthy and strong enough to support dental implants, you’ll need three visits for the implantation process. Dr. Dean implants the posts in your jaw during your first appointment. Your jaw needs a few weeks to recover, which gives the posts time to bond with your bone.

Once your posts are firmly settled in your jaw, Dr. Dean attaches the abutments and takes molds of your mouth. These molds are used to customize your permanent crowns. Dr. Dean fits you with a temporary crown while you wait for your permanent one to arrive.

At your final implant installation appointment, Dr. Dean removes your temporary crown and places your custom-made, permanent crown. He checks the fit and your bite, then buffs the crown until it shines like a natural tooth.

How do I care for my dental implants?

Dental implants are easy to take care of: you brush and floss every day, just like with natural teeth. You also need to attend your regular dental checkups and cleanings. While your dental implants aren’t at risk of decay, Dr. Dean needs to monitor the health of any remaining natural teeth and your gums and jaw.
